Day Eleven: Is there really a choice?

Background:

On day eight we reviewed the different types of sex trafficking. Today we’re talking about the commercial sex trade and how individuals find themselves in it. Do they choose to enter because they enjoy it and want to build a career there? Or are other variables at play? Today we’re discussing how prostitution is the choice for those with the fewest choices.

“Prostitution is the choice of those with the fewest choices.”

Action: Listen to Survivors

The first thing we must do when understanding the complications of the commercial sex trade is to listen to those who have lived it.

Lived Experience Expert, Jaimee Johnson has this to say.

Action: Fight the Systems

So how do we create a world where no one has to resort to the option to sell their bodies? We have to recognize the oppressive systems, poverty, and lack of resources some have that ultimately ushered them into the sex trade.

Advocate for things like:

  • Fair living wages

  • More resources for single moms

  • Affordable housing

  • Access to education and other services
